Fourteen-year-old Michael lives with his mother and Uncle Joe in a hotel in Portpatrick, surrounded both by soldiers preparing to leave for the front and the few broken men who have returned. Michael is fascinated by tales of heroic distant battles, but when he discovers the diaries of a journalist, presumed dead, he begins to ask the questions that no one wants to answer. Why is Uncle Joe so secretive? Why did his father have to leave? What future awaits him? He will also begin to discover the true cost of protecting one boy from a war which has always been much closer than everyone thinks.
Vacancies is a story of loneliness, loss, and the struggle to grow up in a world that is slowly ending.

When a face from the past offers Michael an opportunity to better his position he is drawn into a world of favours and intrigue. But why does Murray want him to investigate the story of a long dead murderer? And is anyone what they really seem?
